The Green Peoples College

Green Peoples College

A future-oriented peoples college which – with strong awareness of our roots and identity – actively contributes to solving the challenges of the planet

To create a multicultural inspired green peoples college with a focus on

  • rooting the students in who we are and where we come from,
  • equipping them to take responsibility for their own lives and for their community with competences within project management and entrepreneurship,
  • teaching them to cultivate the land and build and live sustainably.
  • empowering them to dare to travel into an unpredictable world, both concretely through taking on projects, and figuratively speaking through the inner journey they are led on by personal development.

The story behind

Ever from the beginning, an adult learning and educational center has been a central part of the Oasis project, since we wanted to contribute to the green transition and healthy community life.

In the beginning of 2018, it became clear to us, that it made the most sense to go with the Danish traditional model of Peoples Colleges, also called Folk High Schools.

For a while we focused on a Blue Green College in collaboration with Mikkel Anthonisen and Oceans of Hope in Skælskør. February 2020 it became cleear that we didn’t manage to get the property in Skælskør. Unless a property suited for a Blue Green Peoples College emerge, we are now starting over with our original idea of a Green Peoples College, which of cause will collaborate with Oceans of Hope.

The education

The education is structured around practical projects and a large common body of generally formative subjects, which all students participate in.

  • The practical projects are oriented towards empowering the students to be able to design their lives and careers in a way that can contribute to sustainability in some area of life. For example cultivation of the land, green building, green cookery, foodproduction, design of eco-villages, activation of the body’s self-healing powers or other specific green transition projects. While participating in these practical projects, the students learn how to design a project so that it becomes a reality.
  • The generally formative subjects focus on project management, entrepreneurship, communication, health, personal development, diet & lifestyle, psychology and sociology, natural building, economics & fundraising, media and PR, cultural understanding and cultural meeting, environment and climate, history and society, democracy, culture, art, music, dance & movement.

Other activites

Locally the College will collaborate with schools, cultural organizations, green organisations, patient associations & health services for example with

  • activities for children and young people
  • Seminars on cultivation of soil and shared cooking
  • Possibly make students at local schools responsible for their own plot of land over a period of time
  • Excursions of various kinds
  • Joint arrangements with the area’s cultural institutions

Furthermore the College will form a frame around a development, resource and research center, who collaborates with national and international partners, including arranging seminars and workshops with interdisciplinary and intersectoral content.

It is the ambition that the College will become an international powerhouse in health, co-creation, environment, climate and sustainability. We will participate in research projects together with higher educational institutions from inland and abroad and consistently aim at teaching at the highest level, using guest lecturers from universities and other resource centers from all over the world.

From where does the students come?

The audience is everyone who wants to participate actively in the transition needed for future generations to have good living conditions on our planet. We aim to be able to include people, who are in a transitional stage of their life and need a new foundation to move forward in life from. All students need to be self-reliant in terms of personal needs.

The Peoples College will, in addition to the usual recruitment through the Association of Peoples Colleges, recruit through online courses, collaboration with a variety of green organisations, (eg The Danish National Network of Eco Villages (LØS), Global Ecovillage Network, Gaia Education, The Danish National Association for Ecological Construction, the Transition Movement, the Permaculture Movement, the International Macrobiotic Network and others).

Where will the College be situated?

UPDATE end of February 2020: Since we just learned that we no longer will be able to create a Blue Green People’s College in Skælskør, we are looking for a location, where establishing a Green Peoples College is aligned with the municipal plan, and where homes and green projects and businesses may be established later. Preferably a location, where the blue aspect of the Peoples College can be included.
